Submissions/Article Feedback

This is an accepted submission for Wikimania 2013.

Presentation Media

This presentation will give an update on the Article Feedback Tool (AFT5), an editor engagement tool which was just released on the English, French and German Wikipedias, for evaluation by their communities. Article Feedback invites readers to make suggestions about articles they are reading — and encourages editors to improve these articles based on this feedback. We will demonstrate some of its new features, such better filters, simpler moderation tools and talk page integration, and show how they surface useful feedback and increase editor productivity. We will also discuss how English, French and German community members helped design this new feature, and how other projects can use this tool to engage their users.

Abstract
Detailed proposal

How can we engage readers to contribute more on Wikipedia -- and help editors improve the encyclopedia at the same time?

To address this question, a new version of the Article Feedback Tool (AFT5) was developed by the the Wikimedia Foundation's editor engagement team last year, and just released on the English, French and German Wikipedias, for evaluation by their communities.

Article Feedback invites readers to make suggestions about articles they are reading — and encourages editors to improve these articles based on this feedback.

This presentation will share the latest findings from that experiment, with a focus on how this new tool surfaces useful feedback and increases editor productivity. We will demonstrate some of its new features, such better filters, simpler moderation tools and talk page integration.

We will also discuss how we joined forces with community members from the English, French and German Wikipedias to design this new feature, and point to the different ways in which each community contributed to this project. These examples will illustrate best practices for effective collaborations between the community and foundation for tools like these.

Last but not least, we will give a quick overview on how other projects can use this tool to engage their readers to contribute, as well as provide useful feedback to editors. (If enough people are interested, we can set up a more technical session to go over how to set up Article Feedback on new projects).

In a Q&A session, we will invite questions from participants about this project.

Presenters: Fabrice Florin (product manager), with Pau Giner (designer) and Oliver Keyes (community liaison)

Special guests: Denis Barthel (Wikimedia Deutschland, Team Communities) and Benoît Evellin, aka Trizek (French Wikipedia)
