JoburgpediA Project follows the successes of MonmouthpediA and GibraltarpediA in the United Kingdom. It is the first of its kind in Africa and suitably so in Johannesburg the city of Gold. JoburgpediA pilot involves the Installation of QRcode plaques along side the City of Johannesburg's prestigious Blue Plaques installed in Heritage sites. This project brings together heritage stake holders ( Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, City of Johannesburg and Heritage enthusiasts ) and Wikipedia in the boldest GLAM project in Africa.

This project brings together heritage stake holders ( Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, City of Johannesburg and Heritage enthusiasts ) and Wikipedia in the boldest GLAM project in Africa.
This Presentation explores the complexities involved with bringing together government and private heritage Organizations and getting them to buy into a Wiki project. The following issues will be discussed:
- Government Organizations: Legal considerations?
- Government Heritage departments and City Council have a lot of Bureaucracy inherent in the system. It is important to identify a department that is likely to listen to a proposal on a project that involves heritage sites. Furthermore it is important to identify current heritage projects that are being run by the city and to plan a wiki project around these. The main aim of contacting and talking to local authorities is so that they can officially endorse the wiki project and in so doing have a legal vehicle to donate an enormous of metadata that they usually have in their city archives. The secondary aim is to get them to spend some money in support of the project, this is usually not achievable during the pilot stage. The JoburgpediA team was able to get the above right as early as possible.
- Private Heritage Organizations: What makes a good buy-in for them?
- Private Heritage Organizations are usually at loggerheads with the local authorities with regards to preservation and well keep of heritage buildings and sites. It is almost imperative that negotiations with these Organizations follow shortly after endorsements from local authorities have been obtained. Private heritage Organizations usually possess a well maintained archive on heritage sites and buildings and would be willing to donate some amount of metadata for the proposed wiki project. JoburgpediA has benefited from having the Johannesburg heritage foundation "come to the party". Wikipedia's offer of wider and more diverse reach is still the best buy in for private and government institutions.
- Heritage Activists/Enthusiasts: Where do they fit into the scheme of things?
- individual Heritage Activists present an inexhaustible source of insight and volunteer pool for wiki projects. These individuals have been canvassing for the preservation of heritage sites in and around the city. They would be interested in being a part of a project that brings stakeholders that they may have interacted with over the years, only this project offers them a chance to be on the same side.
JoburgpediA is unique due to its ability to bring together all of the above stakeholders and getting them to buy into this project. The hype and excitement that resulted around this project and the city was unprecedented. This project offered the South African Wikimedia Chapter a chance to get these important sectors of the heritage society to "take Wikipedia seriously" as both a credible source of information and a tool with which to reach out to the public. This is the true story of JoburgpediA, the very first of its kind in Africa.
