Detailed proposal

Make the web speak your language (Panel discussion on multilingual support on the Internet)

Wikipedia is available in 280+* languages providing ease of access to information in one’s own native language. Wikipedia users therefore need the appropriate fonts installed and to have a correctly configured operating system and browser to be able to view and edit these articles.

The multilingual support for all world languages is far from complete. And the emergence of personal computing devices such as tablets and phones makes this multilingual support a greater challenge. The growing convergence of the digital world towards mobile devices also requires full language support for basic interactions such as reading, writing, and searching via Web browers or native web apps.

The panel of internationalization experts, Open Source technologists, Web developers and Typographers will share their knowledge and experience with Firefox users, mobile users and Wikipedians.

The panel will bring various disciplines and technologies together to make the web speak everyone’s language.
