Abstract

Wikipedia’s coverage of breaking news events attracts unique levels of attention; the articles with the most page views, edits, and contributors in any given month since 2003 are related to current events. This presentation examines how these breaking news collaborations are different than other Wikipedia articles, analyzes how they impact other articles and editor on Wikipedia, and outlines ways to improve editors' experience on these articles.

Detailed proposal

This presentation reviews work done by me and other academic researchers who are examining how Wikipedia collaborates to write articles about breaking news events such as political turmoil, natural disasters, and technological accidents. Wikipedians editing these topics collaborate under conditions unlike those found on the vast majority of other articles. The mechanisms for supporting collaborations involving dozens of users contributing over a period of months do not map to articles involving hundreds of editors contributing over a period of hours. I review findings from my dissertation that highlight patterns in how Wikipedians collaborate to write these articles, how these collaborations have changed over time, and practices they employ to support them. These findings also point to ways to improve the social practices, techniques, and technology to better support this high profile and very important work.
