Abstract

Believe it or not: There's a wiki world beyond Wikimedia projects! Even more so, public wikis are on the rise. There's a lot of awesome knowledge platforms out there using MediaWiki. And we can clearly see these projects are more and more leaving amateur level and heading towards professionalisation. In my presentation, I'll show you some cool use cases of 3rd party MediaWiki use. What are the issues they are facing? What can we learn from them? How can we as Wikimedia projects benefit from their experience and technical developments? If you want to start your own wiki community, you'll learn about how to start a project and about common pitfalls.

Detailed proposal

Believe it or not: There's a wiki world beyond Wikimedia projects! Even more so, public wikis are on the rise. There's a lot of awesome knowledge platforms out there using MediaWiki. And we can clearly see these projects are more and more leaving amateur level and heading towards professionalisation. In my presentation, I'll show you some cool use cases of 3rd party MediaWiki use, including the W3C Webplatform, Desertec Wiki and Co:Lab, initiated by Google. Being involved in some of those projects, I'll share some first hand experience on building up professional wiki driven sites. What are the issues they are facing? What can we learn from them? How can we as Wikimedia projects benefit from their experience and technical developments? There's always the question of how the content in specialized public wikis relates to Wikipedia without duplicating its articles. If you want to start your own wiki community, you'll learn about how to start a project and about common pitfalls.
