- Abstract
Conflict of interest challenges the foundation of neutrality, and few areas on Wikipedia have been more fraught with controversy. How do we distinguish useful useful contributions by organizations from promotional efforts to slant articles? Is it appropriate for organizational advocates to suggest drafts for review? How do we avoid press blowups over the appearance of impropriety in outreach relationships? How does conflict of interest relate to the outing and privacy policies? Can dedicated editors responsibly turn their passion for Wikipedia into a sustainable lifestyle? What do Wikipedians need to know to maintain their integrity as contributors while protecting Wikipedia's credibility?
- Detailed proposal
This presentation and ensuing discussion will not make an argument about the propriety of conflict of interest editing; instead the approach will be suggesting learnings and best practices from the robust debates, scandals, and developments that have occurred on Wikipedia in the last decade. Then we'll discuss the gray areas, and see what we can agree on or need to do next and better.
Conflict of interest challenges the foundation of neutrality, and few areas on Wikipedia have been more fraught with controversy. Learn about the spheres of conflict of interest--a tour through inherent human bias, civil POV pushers, Wikipedians in Residence, for-profit consultants, corporate advocates, and transparent as well as secret paid editors. How do we distinguish useful contributions from within organizations from promotional efforts to slant articles? Is it appropriate for corporate advocates to suggest drafts for review? How do we avoid press blowups over the appearance of impropriety in outreach relationships? How does conflict of interest relate to the outing and privacy policies? Can dedicated editors responsibly turn their passion for Wikipedia into a sustainable lifestyle? What do Wikipeidans need to know to maintain otheir r integrity as contributors while protecting Wikipedia's credibility?
