- Abstract
WikiMiniAtlas is a Javascript plugin, enabled by default on many Wikipedias, to display a draggable, zoomable, and clickable worldmap (as well as other bodies of the solarsystem) in geocoded articles. I will give an overview of the latest developments, which include three-dimensional building models on the map, super-high zoom levels through client-side vector rendering, and userinterface improvements. The technically interested will get a view under the hood of WMA’s complex server components and HTML5 JavaScript client code. An outlook on how to integrate the WikiMiniAtlas with the Wikimedia infrastructure to improve scalability will conclude the talk.

meta:WikiMiniAtlas is a Javascript plugin, enabled by default on many Wikipedias, to display a draggable, zoomable, and clickable worldmap (as well as other bodies of the solarsystem) in geocoded articles. I will give an overview of the latest developments, which include
- three-dimensional building models (using WebGL) on the map (File:Wma_webglbuildings.webm)
- super-high zoom levels through client-side vector rendering using JSON mapdata on HTML5 canvas elements
- userinterface improvements, which are a result of a collaboration with a user interface designer that was struck up at last years WikiMania in D.C. !
The technically interested will get a view under the hood of WMA’s complex server components and HTML5 JavaScript client code. An outlook on how to integrate the WikiMiniAtlas with the Wikimedia infrastructure to improve scalability will conclude the talk. In march I was invited by the Foundation to a mapping hackathon in Copenhagen where the future of mapping applications within Wikimedia projects was discussed. The WikiMiniAtlas is being used in many of the major Wikipedia language versions (first and foremost the english wikipedia) and is likely to continue to play a role.
