What is this?

This is an informal pre-conference workshop to help people (especially those giving a presentation at Wikimania) practice their presentations in a supportive environment and gain tips on how to present more effectively. This a friendly, drop-in, interactive session to share information between all of us -- novice and experienced presenters alike!

What kinds of things will happen in this workshop?

Some discussion between experienced presenters on tips and tricks for presentations
Some full-group exercises
5-minute slots for individuals to give (part of) their presentation in front of another person, and receive feedback

Who is it for?

Anyone -- experienced presenters or not -- who wants to hear other ideas about presentation skills and practice their presentations. Especially geared towards those who are new at giving presentations or not comfortable doing so, or those who just want to practice their Wikimania talk to make it as great as it can be! We encourage all interested Wikimania presenters to drop by and at least practice their talk during one of the group practice slots, as even one practice in front of a small audience can improve a talk immeasurably!

Part 0: preparation

participants will get more out of this workshop if they:

bring a presentation that they have been working on / have finished
have a laptop or printout of slides that they can present from
have already practiced the full presentation once in front of a mirror

feel free to show up early to the workshop to practice: the room should be empty. I may be able to arrive as soon as 15:00, but no promises

Part 1: full group & panel

15:30-16:05, 35 minutes

for this part, we will work together as a group to practice presenting skills and share best practices.

Introductions, overview (5 min)
Exercises: 'elevator speech'; posture, positioning, pacing, mics (10 min)
Discussion: slides and presentation content (15-20 min)

Message -- what do you want people to remember? What can you tell them that's unique?
Audience - who is it, and how can they get involved?
Lessons learned - what surprised you?
Anticipating questions (especially wikimedia questions)

Break

Part 2: individual presentations & discussion

16:05-17:00+ 60 minutes, depending on signups

for this part, individuals will pair up, practice their presentations and get feedback.

Paired presentation practice 1 20 minutes (10 minutes per presenter: present for 5 minutes, discuss for 5)
Discussion: how to fix things that go wrong (15-20 min)

how to edit on the fly
tech support
overcoming stage fright
the distracting question (aka "but what about...")
the questioner that won't stop

Paired presentation practice 2 (20 minutes - present for 7 minutes each, 3 minutes each for question practice)
if people want to continue practicing their presentations, we can continue past the official ending time
