- Abstract
It is difficult to present Wikipedia and Wikimedia related issues: the most important may be copyright, free knowledge, wiki principle, and encyclopedic writing. What are the interests of our specific audience, and what are actually your interests or the interests of the movement you represent? 'Teaching Wikipedia' is even more challenging.
I have presented our issues many times in schools, universities, hobby associations, at panel discussions, in four different languages, and I have written a printed Wikipedia textbook in German. For Wikimedia Deutschland I am a Referent in its 'Knowledge and Education program'.
- Detailed proposal
Presenting Wikipedia and Wikimedia related issues (copyright, free knowledge, wiki principle, encyclopedic writing etc.) can be quite a challenge. What are the interests of our specific audience, and what are actually your interests or the interests of the movement you represent? 'Teaching Wikipedia' is even more challenging. Wikipedians tend to find it difficult to make a good choice of what content they should present, and what are precisely the skills to teach in a Wikipedia lesson. For someone who is heavily involved in the Wikimedia universe it is difficult to change the perspective, to avoid jargon etc.
I have presented our issues many times in schools, universities, hobby associations, at panel discussions, in four different languages, and I have written a printed Wikipedia textbook in German. For Wikimedia Deutschland I am a Referent in the 'Knowledge and Education program', having tought pupils, college students and senior citizens in contributing to Wikipedia.
Outreach is based on an analysis of the audience, a thorough thinking through of your subjects, the didactical reduction and a very, very thoughtful use of technical terms. In this session I would like to share my experiences and get some feedback.
