- Abstract
- Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) is an international photography competition, organized since 2010 and recognized as the largest photography competition in the world. Since the start of WLM in The Netherlands in 2010 the competition had grown immensely and it has now global dimensions. In 2013 the contest was organized in 35 countries, and brought in more than 350.000 images by 15.000+ participants.
- In this presentation, two members of the international coordinating team will give an introduction to Wiki Loves Monuments, and some insight behind the screens. What is the scope exactly, how does it work, what is the historical background, how did the project develop and why is it successful? And... what's new in 2013?
- Detailed proposal
- Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) is an international photography competition around cultural heritage monuments, organized since 2010 and recognized as the largest photography competition in the world. Since the start of WLM in The Netherlands in 2010 the competition has grown from one country event to having global dimensions. In 2011, 18 countries from Europe submitted more than 160,000 images. In 2012 the contest expanded globally and was organized in 35 countries, bringing in more than 350.000 images by 15.000+ participants.
- In this presentation, two members of the international coordinating team will give an introduction to Wiki Loves Monuments, and some insight behind the screens. Relevant topics include: the scope of the contest, how it works, the historical background, how the project developed and why it is successful.
- The presentation will include an overview of the results of the three years of the contest showing how Wiki Loves Monuments developed from a 1-country contest into an international project where many chapters, groups and individuals collaborate. The presentation aim is to give a solid introduction for possibly other sessions to build upon, and to explain the 2013 contest in that context: what is the same, what is new. Especially noteworthy is the panel discussion which has also been proposed - both proposed session timings have been suggested so that they would be a nice fit. Finally, there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
