2013 was the first time that the photo contest Wiki Loves Public Art took place with five different countries participating and many more investigating the possibility, organized in cooperation with Europeana. This year the contest was a pilot and there was a wide variety on how the contest was structured in the countries, with many lessons to be learned for next year when we are planning to organize Wiki Loves Public Art again! Come and listen to what happened, what didn’t happen, why the heck it happened in the first place and how we will make it happen again in one form or another.

2013 was the first time that the photo contest Wiki Loves Public Art took place with five different countries participating and many more investigating the possibility, organized in cooperation with Europeana. This year the contest was a pilot and there was a wide variety on how the contest was structured in the countries, with many lessons to be learned for next year when we are planning to organize Wiki Loves Public Art again!
We were inspired greatly by the success of the Wiki Loves Monuments contest and had a good use of the structures developed for that contest. However, many things needed to be created and developed from the start and we had many specific issues that we had to tackle, from investigating the legislative situation to finding and creating proper lists. The participating countries had different challenges and found innovative solutions to the different problems.
For example Finland does not have freedom of panorama but created lists anyway and controlled which artworks were old enough - using this as a PR opportunity to highlight the problem in Finnish legislation. In Sweden the law was so unclear that we decided to focus on the Public Domain artworks in museums and initiated cooperations with ten different art museums as part of the contest. Sweden also didn’t have a national database, so we decided to create one and get the municipalities to start thinking about open data while doing it. In Austria and Spain (Catalonia) the law was not the biggest problem but they had to get individual lists from each city and had a very interesting cooperations coming from that. In Israel the contest was mainly organized by the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, and not officially endorsed by the chapter (even though they did not object either). All in all, many different and exciting challenges to handle when organising this type of an international photo contest for the first time.
